Outvyr / How scores work

How Outvyr scores a video

Every number Outvyr shows comes from fixed rules and simple maths, no AI. Here they all are, including where they fall short.

The score

score = video views ÷ the channel's typical views

"Typical" is the median (the middle value) of the channel's recent uploads, up to 30 of them, read from the channel's public Videos tab and kept for 24 hours. The median ignores one viral hit, so it reflects what a normal video from that channel gets. It is never set below 100 views, so tiny channels don't produce silly numbers. Shorts are only scored on a channel's Shorts tab, against that channel's other Shorts.

Like for like

Channels grow and shrink, and new videos haven't had time to collect their views. So when Outvyr knows the age of at least 8 uploads, it doesn't use one typical number for everything:

  • Videos older than a week are compared with the 10 uploads closest to them in age. A video from two years ago is measured against the channel as it was then.
  • Videos younger than a week are compared with the channel's 15 most recent uploads that are at least a week old, because younger ones haven't got their views yet.

Young videos

Under 12 hours old a video shows New instead of a score. Up to 3 days, Outvyr also works out an age-adjusted score, using how much of its typical views a video usually has at that age:

AgeExpected share of typical views
up to 6 hours25%
up to 12 hours35%
up to 24 hours55%
up to 48 hours72%
up to 72 hours85%

The badge always shows the plain score. The age-adjusted one lets a video in its first two days be labelled an outlier early, and feeds the breakout score below.

Labels

LabelRule
OutlierScore 3x or more, or in its first 48 hours an age-adjusted score of 3.5x or more
Mega outlierScore 10x or more, or in its first 48 hours an age-adjusted score of 10x or more
Small-channel gemChannel under 10K subscribers, and the video has 25K+ views or a score of 5x or more

Views per hour

For the first week: views ÷ hours since upload. After that, plain views per hour overstates the pace, because the launch is still in the number, so Outvyr divides by a slowly growing factor: 1 at one week, about 2 at ten weeks, under 3 at a year. Speed labels: exploding at 1,000+ views per hour (or 250+ for a mega outlier), surging at 150+ or for any outlier, cooling under 15 once a video is older than a week.

Breakout score

A single 5 to 99 number on the score card that blends three things: up to 55 points from the score (age-adjusted for young videos), up to 25 from views per hour and up to 20 from views compared with subscribers (10 when the subscriber count is hidden). Each part grows on a log scale, so going from 1x to 3x counts more than going from 30x to 33x.

How sure is it?

Each score has a confidence level. High: Outvyr read 12 or more uploads and the video isn't far older than all of them. Medium: at least 4 uploads. Anything less is an estimate and shows with a ~. When a channel page can't be read at all, Outvyr estimates from the other videos on screen and says so.

Limits

  • YouTube rounds view counts (1.2M), so scores are close, not exact.
  • A score tells you a video beat its channel, not why. Dissect helps with the why, but it's still your call.
  • Past results don't promise future ones. A 10x topic can be done again and flop.
  • Outvyr only sees public pages. It doesn't know about traffic sources, ads or a channel's private stats.
