How to find outlier videos on YouTube
An outlier is a video that beat its own channel. Finding them is the fastest way to see which topics and packaging people want right now, before you spend a week making a video nobody clicks.
1. What counts as an outlier
Raw views mislead: a million views is normal for a huge channel and a miracle for a small one. Compare each video with its own channel instead. Outlier score = video views ÷ median views of the channel's recent uploads. 1x is a normal video, 3x is strong, 10x+ is a breakout.
2. Find them by hand
- Search your topic on YouTube and open a channel from the results.
- Open its Videos tab and note the views of its last 10–20 long videos.
- Take the middle value (the median). Divide each video's views by it.
- Anything at 3x or more is an outlier. Write down its title, thumbnail idea and first line.
It works, but it takes 10–15 minutes per channel.
